The “film” Trash Humpers is about a group of elderly people walking around, humping trash cans, breaking things and generally being as disgusting as possible. That’s it. There is no plot and very little dialogue. Trash Humpers is shot on grainy VHS tapes and edited together as disjointedly as possible. It’s disgusting and I loved it.
On the surface level Harmony Korine's Trash Humpers is a straightforward, terrible movie. Unfortunately for the people that walked out early, the film works on a deeper level. This is why people hate it. People watch it and think, “this is disgusting and pointless.” They think this because they are stuck in the mindset of normal movie watching. They wait for a plot, for characters, for acting. Trash HumpersTrash Humper transcends the boundary of story and creates an emotional reaction in you. To some it is of disgust and anger. To others, like myself, it gives us a freedom. s tells us to forget our boundaries. To not worry what others think of us. To take down all these walls and dance in the moonlight. To strip naked and run in circles with a paper hat. To be a child again. To do what makes you feel good regardless of it being silly, pointless or disturbing. Trash Humpers is a meditation on enlightenment. A stripping of the ego.
You can see Trash Humpers one of two ways: a disgusting, pointless, poorly thrown together home movie, or an introspective meditation on the beauty of what it means to simply, be human. Take your pick; in the end, it's up to you.
