The box office pulled in a fairly decent weekend. Shrek Forever After captured the top spot with $71.3 Million, which was on the low end of the projected $70 - $95 Million. It was the fourth largest animated movie opening weekend, behind Shrek the Third, Shrek 2, and The Simpsons Movie, respectively. However, a close look reveals that Shrek had lost much of its power.
Compared to Shrek the Third, Shrek Forever After opened 41% lower, and when you calculate the price of the 3D tickets, the drop looks more like a steep jump, than small dive. Estimating that the IMAX and 3D ticket premiums accounted for about $13 Million of its earnings, Shrek Forever After was the least successful of all four of Shrek's opening weekends. The original Shrek sold about 7.5 Million more tickets than Shrek Forever After did.
Iron Man 2 and Robin Hood both dropped about 50%, which was to be expected. Just Wright and Letters to Juliet both held well, with Letters to Juliet only dropping 33%.
The weekend's surprise was MacGruber earning only $4.1 Million, which was less than anticipated. In comparison, Undercover Brother made about $12 Million its opening weekend, while the original Austin Powers made about $9.5 Million.
