We all knew it was eventually going to happen, James Cameron's Avatar was unseated at the weekend box office by the adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' Romantic love-fest Dear John.
The movie, starring All-American hunk Channing Tatum and Mamma Mia!'s Amanda Seyfried garnered roughly 32.4 million dollars in ticket sales this past weekend, proving that you can never underestimate the depth of the purse of a teenage girl.
Avatar still had a banner weekend, pulling in an impressive 23.6 million in its eighth week of release, bringing its domestic gross to an even more record breaking 630 million dollars, sinking James Cameron's previous effort, Titanic, even further down the list in all-time domestic grossing movies. Avatar is still expected to gross near 700 million by the time its run is completed.
The rest of the weekend box office fell in line accordingly, with new release From Paris with Love performing less than expected with a mere 8.1 million dollars, followed by Mel Gibson's tale of revenge, Edge of Darkness and Dwyane "the Rock" Johnson's family-friendly Tooth Fairy raking in 7 million and 6.5 million respectively.
The top ten movies pulled in a total of 97.55 million dollars, down from the same time last year when the top ten grossed 123.4 million, led by He's Just Not That Into You.
