- James Gandofini was the voice of the charismatic and impulsive Wild Thing Carol.
- A movie version of Where the Wild Things Are had been in the works since the early 90s. Maurice Sendak had not been able to find a fitting director until he approached Spike Jonze.
- In the movie, Max is standing on a small pile of books in his room and the spine of one of them clearly reads Where the Wild Things Are.
- Max Records' favorite part of the original book is when Max meets a sea monster. That scene is not included in the film version.
- Where the Wild Things Are is the first movie that any of the cast members have appeared in which was released on IMAX screens.
