Robert De Niro will play legendary football coach Vince Lombardi, who led the Green Bay Packers to five league championships, in the upcoming sports biopic "Lombardi." Screenwriter Eric Roth, who wrote "Forrest Gump" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," will adapt the script from the book "Instant Replay." The project is being produced by ESPN films, a new company. As of now, the movie is set to be released a week before the 2012 Superbowl. No director is attached.
Like most guys, I'm a huge De Niro fan. But I'm not sold on this. Sports films--especially biopics--rarely work. And De Niro hasn't made many good movies lately. I think, at best, it'll be a solid popcorn film, but nothing special.
