I randomly caught part of the classic French film L’Atalante (1934) the other day. It had been a few years since I last saw the movie—this clip reminded me why it’s regarded as one of the best films of all time. The most famous part of L’Atalante, this scene features the innovative swimming sequence, a perfect pairing of music and imagery. This ranks as one of the most effective combinations of sound and visuals I’ve ever seen.
It got me thinking about other excellent uses of music and imagery throughout cinema. Here are a few more of my favorites:
Citizen Kane Opening
Apocalypse Now Opening
Raging Bull Montage
2001 Sequence
